Columbia chose BCKCNTRY.com to aid them in a field test of their newest fabric technology, Omni-Heat. And let it be known that this Omni-Heat stuff, and this jacket, are both incredible.

The Columbia Powder Bowl Parka is every snowboarders dream jacket. It is highly breathable, leaving your body temp. comfortable and relatively sweat-free. It is incredibly waterproof, meaning you’ll stay dry and warm all day. And this new Omni-Heat fabric adds up to 20% more heat when you really need it most. This is truly an all-in-one jacket for any type of shredder.

The conditions of our field test were absolutely incredible. We headed out to Mt. Rainier National Park in the Central Cascades of Washington State on a beautiful sunny day, to get some snowshoeing/snowboarding action in. A storm the day before had brought some serious snowfall (~2ft. or 60cm), and being that it was a Thursday, we had the mountain practically to ourselves. The weather was pleasant (~25°f or -4°c), with wind gusts of about 30mph/50kph all day, but with this jacket on I could hardly feel any of it.

The techincal feature that really impressed me the most about the Powder Bowl Parka was the breathability factor of the Omni-Tech Fabric. For those of you who have snowshoed in fresh powder, you know that it is about the workout equivalent of running in loose sand, and can leave you exhausted and uncomfortably sweaty by the time your done hiking. Well with this Omni-Tech Fabric technology, paired with the Omni-Heat inner lining, it was like the jacket knew when I was warm (regulating my temp. by letting in cool air), and knew when I was cold (utilizing the power of the Omni-Heat, which can be up to 20% warmer then normal inner-linings, to increase warmth). It was pretty amazing how comfortable it kept me throughout the day.
